T-shirts are a staple in any person’s wardrobe, but surprisingly, most of us don’t know how to fold a t-shirt properly. Custom t-shirts are super versatile and comfortable, and for that reason, are the most abundant piece of clothing in a person's closet. Often leading to a cluttered closet full of wrinkly t-shirts. We all know how annoying it is to get ready in the morning only to find that you have no wrinkle-free clothing available. And let’s face it, no one wants to take the time to iron their clothing when they are in a rush to get to work. That's why it’s important to learn how to fold and store t-shirts efficiently. So, how can you fold a t-shirt properly to avoid a messy closet and ironing? Read on to find out!

How to Fold a T-Shirt, Step by Step

  1. Hold your t-shirt up with the front of the shirt facing you, using your middle fingers to hold the front of the shoulders and your index finger to grip the back of the shoulder.
  2. Use your middle fingers to fold each sleeve and side of the tee inwards across the back of the shirt, folding where your index finger is. It is best to do this with each side and hand simultaneously. This will leave you with the sleeves and sides touching, but not crossing one another.
  3. Lay the shirt on a flat surface with the back of it facing towards you.
  4. Grab the end of the shirt that is closest to you and fold the shirt in half from top to bottom, aligning the collar with the bottom hem of the tee.
  5. You may fold the tee one more time from top to bottom if you need more storage space.
  6. All done!

Advantages of this method:

  • Best for stacking tees
  • Useful for storage and travel
  • Easy

Disadvantages of this method:

  • May crease around folded areas

How to Fold a T-Shirt in 2 Seconds

  1. Lay the shirt face down on a flat surface with the top of the shirt facing you. Be sure to smooth out any wrinkles and even iron the tee if need be.
  2. Fold the shirt in half from left to right, folding the sleeves to the middle as well.
  3. Fold the tee in half from bottom to top two times.
  4. Flip the shirt over, and you are good to go!

Advantages of this method:

  • Quick folding time
  • Simple
  • Useful for storage and travel

Disadvantages of this method:

  • Will likely crease around the areas you have folded

Other Methods of Storing T-Shirts

The Army Roll

  1. Lay your tee on a flat surface with the front facing you. (Be sure to smooth out any wrinkles.)
  2. Gripping the bottom hem of the tee, invert and fold up about 3 to 4 inches.
  3. Fold the sleeves over so they align with the outer seam.
  4. Fold one side of the shirt over and across so the edge now aligns with the opposite side of the collar. Ensuring you fold the entire shirt included the inverted bottom portion.
  5. Fold the other side over the portion you just folded and make sure everything is laying flat.
  6. Start at the top of the tee and start rolling tightly. Rolling it tight is key.
  7. Once it has been folded, grab the extra fabric that you folded in step 2 and stretch that fabric tightly over the rolled shirt.
  8. You now have an army rolled t-shirt!

Advantages of this method:

  • Can fit in small storage spaces
  • Great for packing
  • Allows for extra storage
  • Wrinkle-free
  • Makes it easy to see shirts in a quick glance without having to ruin the fold

Disadvantages of this method:

  • Depending on the fabric, you could run the risk of stretching the bottom cuff

The Rectangle

  1. Hold your shirt up with the front of the shirt facing you, gripping each shoulder.
  2. Fold the shirt in half vertically.
  3. Lay the sleeves straight and fold them together across the top of the tee, so the sleeve meets the collar. It should now look like a long rectangle.
  4. Fold the tee in half from top to bottom.
  5. All done!

Advantages of this method:

  • Great for stacking tees
  • Allows you to view the t-shirt without having to refold it

Disadvantages of this method:

  • Not the best method for travel
  • May cause creasing

How to Fold a Dress Shirt

  1. Lay the shirt on a flat surface with the back of the shirt facing towards you.
  2. Fold in the long sleeves one at a time.
  3. Fold in both sides of the shirt into the center.
  4. Grab the bottom and fold up into thirds.
  5. Flip the shirt over and you are all done!

Advantages of this method:

  • The collar will stay intact

Disadvantages of this method:

  • Creases will likely form
  • Dress shirts stay in the best shape when hung up

The Hanger

  1. Simply grab a hanger from your closet and hang your t-shirt in your closet!

Advantages of this method:

  • A wrinkle-free t-shirt (if you remember to hang it, of course.)

Disadvantages of this method:

  • May take up more room in your closet that you could be using for dress shirts and other apparel items.

Learning how to fold and store your t-shirts properly will prevent them from stretching, free up closet space and will save you time when getting ready for your day because you won’t have to iron them again.
